Irish Internet Neutral Exchange Implements Native IPv6

(31.05.2003) INEX, the Dublin-based Internet exchange, announced today the implementation of native IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) switching facilities at its peering centre in Clondalkin.

IPv6 is the next-generation protocol designed to replace the current version, IPv4, now over twenty years old. IPv6 aims to resolve a number of technical problems with version 4, which threaten to impede the continued growth of the public Internet. It greatly increases the supply of Internet
addresses, used by every system on the Internet, and also makes many improvements in areas such as security, network management and quality of service.

"This is a very exciting development", said Dave Rynne, Internet Systems Manager in EsatBT. "It puts the INEX among the first Internet exchange points in the world which have native IPv6 peering facilities. This demonstrates the commitment of the INEX and its members to innovation and to providing a high-quality service for Irish internet businesses and consumers."

Dave Wilson, Senior Network Engineer in HEAnet Ltd. commented, "IPv6 is the future of the Internet, and this development is critical to the roll-out of IPv6 infrastructure within Ireland. We feel that it's of vital importance to take this initiative and to ensure that Ireland's national network
infrastructure is in a strong and competitive position for the future."

The INEX's high-speed switching facility is securely hosted at the Data Electronics Group co-location centre in Kilcarbery Park, Clondalkin (see http://www.dataelec.com/). Technical support is provided by Network Ability (see http://www.netability.ie/). The exchange provides Irish, European and American Internet companies with a neutral infrastructure to enable them to exchange Internet traffic efficiently within Ireland. Members can engage in local and international peering and transit at the INEX.
