Senior Systems Administrator: Storage and Virtualisation Expert

HEAnet is Ireland’s National Education & Research Network, providing high quality Internet Services to the 180,000 students and staff in Irish Universities, Institutes of Technology, and the research and education community including primary and post-primary schools. It provides a high-speed national network with direct connectivity for its community to other networks in Ireland, Europe, the USA and the rest of the world.

HEAnet are seeking a Storage and Virtualisation Expert to work as part of a small team to design, implement, maintain and support advanced system and networking services to the Research and Education sector in Ireland.

Duties:

The successful candidate will undertake the following:

  • Building resilient internet services
  • Designing scaleable high speed / high availability data storage and compute environments
  • Driving adoption of HEAnet’s storage and virtualisation services
  • Working with clients to research requirements for new services
  • Designing service provisioning tools
  • Managing the platforms which deliver HEAnet’s suite of services
  • Participation in research projects with clients and peers

Experience:

Essential:

  • Minimum six (6) years experience of Linux, Unix or Unix-like Systems Administration, ideally in an internet service business, providing server and network management support for internal and external customers;
  • Experience with system administration of WAN and LAN storage attached network technology;
  • Two (2) or more years working with virtualised hardware and software;

Desirable:

  • Experience designing and/or operating cloud management platforms;
  • Working with operations teams to deliver services to end users;
  • Experience with, and research of the novel storage and compute virtualisation software/services.

Skills and Aptitudes:

Essential:

  • Expert system administration & technical analysis skills;
  • Experience building and managing virtual server environments;
  • Very familiar with networking technology;
  • Expert with internet service architectures;
  • Expert with storage fabric management;
  • Storage service expertise: architectural and operational competences;
  • Excellent Communication Skills – verbal & written.

Desirable:

  • Expertise with hypervisors and cloud management platforms, e.g. one or more of :
    • Vmware, KVM, XEN;
    • OpenNebula, CloudStack, vCloud, etc.
  • Expertise with Internet services, including:
    • DNS, HTTP;
    • Thorough understanding of internet networking (TCP/IP) and technologies for deploying highly resilient services.
  • Expert with Linux/Unix system administration tools, including:
    • Comprehensive knowledge of modern Linux OSes - preferably Ubuntu and Debian;
    • Expert with scripting tools, eg: bash, Perl, awk, sed, etc.
  • Familiar with networking techonologies, including:
    • Resilient high speed network architecture design and implementation;
    • Switching technologies e.g. VLANs, HSRP.
  • Familiar with system monitoring software (e.g. cacti, MRTG, Smokeping, Icinga, Nagios, rancid);
  • System profiling tools;
  • Routers and routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, IS/IS);
  • Router and switch system hardware architecture.

Personal Characteristics:

Essential:

  • Proven ability to work as part of a team and as an individual;
  • Friendly, collaborative approach;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

Education:

  • Educated to degree level in Computer Science / Computer Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience.

The successful candidate will be based at HEAnet's office, 5 George's Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1.

Salary:
