Bob Day/Chris Kelly, UKERNA

SuperJANET4: the UK's Gigabit Network

This talk will provide an overview of how education and research networking in the United Kingdom has developed through the SuperJANET4 project.
It will cover the design and procurement of the new network and its connection to the growing number of regional education and research networks in the UK, including activities in Northern Ireland.
The talk will conclude with an examination of some of the technological and organisational challenges which needed to be met, and which will have to be tackled in the coming years.

Bob Day

Bob Day is the Network Development Director and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of UKERNA, the UK Education and Research Networking Association.
UKERNA is responsible for the provision of JANET, the network which serves tertiary education and research within the UK.
Amongst other responsibilities, Bob is Programme Director for SuperJANET4, the project which has resulted in an upgrade JANET to Gigabit bandwidths and which continues to support the development of new applications in education and research.

Chris Kelly

Chris Kelly is UKERNA' s Regional Network Co-ordinator in Northern Ireland.
He is on secondment to UKERNA from Queens University Belfast and has been responsible for bringing JANET to the further education colleges within Northern Ireland.
Chris is presently working with the higher and further education community to plan and implement a high bandwidth regional network to serve the tertiary education sector in Northern Ireland, and with HEAnet on the project to upgrade the bandwidth of the link between HEAnet and SuperJANET4
