John Green,  JANET-CERT

Paper

The first CERT was setup by DARPA in 1988 in response to the Morris Worm, which bought down much of the Internet.
JANET-CERT was formed in 1994, although a CERT function existed informally before this time. UKERNA began operating a CERT function on behalf of HEANET in 1999.

The number of incidents reported each month have increased rapidly. The types of incident have also become more varied.. By and large this has mirrored the change in the make up of the Internet, and its users, in general. JANET-CERT tackles computer security issues in a number of different ways.
Reactive incident response will always be a big part, but proactive tasks such as training, awareness and liaison also play a key role.
By seeing how computer security has changed in the recent past, we can hopefully adapt to meet the challenges ahead.

John Green

John Green is currently a member of JANET-CERT based within UKERNA (the company which runs the academic network within the UK).
Prior to joining JANET-CERT he spent two years working for the UK Meteorological Office conducting research into aviation weather forecasting.
The majority of his time within JANET-CERT is spent operating and developing the incident response service, although he is also interested in distributed Intrusion Detection Systems and incident response automation.
