Tom Boland is the Chief Executive Officer of the Higher Education Authority, a post he was appointed to in January 2004. He was appointed interim Chairman of the HEAnet Board of Directors in September 2005. He is a career civil servant who has served in the Department of Justice, the Office of the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Education and Science. In the Department of Education and Science he worked as legal adviser and as Director of Strategic Policy. He played a central role in putting in place a modern legislative basis for the education sector at all levels, including the first Education Act, the first Universities Act and the first Act relating to the education of people with special educational needs. He holds qualifications in civil engineering from NUIG and law (The King's Inns), and was called to the Irish Bar in 1989. |

John Boland is the Chief Executive Officer of HEAnet, Ireland's National Education & Research Network. He was appointed to this position in October 1997 when HEAnet was incorporated as a limited company with its own staff. Prior to 1997 he worked as Systems and Networks Manager in the Computer Services Department of Dublin City University and represented DCU on the HEAnet Network Management Committee, before its incorporation. Prior to joining DCU John worked in industry with a number of international companies including Marconi Communications Systems in the UK, Motorola Information Systems in the UK and the US and Westinghouse in Australia. He holds a B. E. in electronic engineering from University College Dublin and has embarked on an ongoing M. Sc. in Computer Applications. As CEO of HEAnet John is involved in the development of world-class Internet services for education and research in Ireland. Currently John is a member of DANTE's Board of Directors, and represents HEAnet on the NREN GEANT Policy Committee, a collaboration between the European National Research Networks and the European Commission, delivering advanced pan-European research and education networking. He is also a member of the TERENA General Assembly (Trans European Research and Education Networking Association) and on the international task force for Internet2. |

Mike Norris is CTO of HEAnet. He was network coordinator from 1992 until 1998, and before that worked at University College, Dublin. He was the hostmaster for the IE toplevel domain, and was local IP registrar for Irish education and research. He has served on the Board of RIPE NCC and while chairman of the Local IR working group, co-authored ripe-152. A founder-member of INEX, he is currently a Director. He is a member of the review panel of the Terena Compendium. |

Ann has worked for HEAnet since 2000, and as Network Operations Manager since 2002. Her main duties are client support, network management, change control, problem management and day-to-day operations of the HEAnet NOC. Ann is addicted to education and holds a BA(TSM)(TCD), a H.Dip(CS)(UCD) and a MA(CMS)(Open). She is co-chair of a Terena Task Force on Life Cycle and Portfolio Management for NRENs. |

Pat Dempsey is Head of Strategic Services within Computer Services in NUI Galway. Pat is responsible for providing leadership to the University at large on strategic and policy aspects of the delivery of ICT projects and services. Previous to joining NUI Galway in 2005, he was Engineering Manager for Nortel with responsibility for providing senior level pre-sales and consultancy services to customers across Europe. He began his career in 1989 with Digital Equipment Corporation, now Hewlett Packard, where he was part of the technical services delivery team with specific technical responsibilities for the development and deployment of multi-vendor customer services across Europe. He holds a B.Eng degree in Electronic Engineering and a Masters degree in Computer Systems from University of Limerick, Ireland. |

Dr Niall O'Reilly has over 25 years experience in academic computing and data communications services. For almost all of this time he has been with UCD Computing Services, with a number of periods of absence on leave or secondment. During his career, Niall has been responsible for developing and operating computer systems and network services for UCD Computing Services, has played key roles in setting up HEAnet and HEAnet-2, has installed and operated a continental X.25 network for EARN (one of the predecessors of TERENA), has managed the .IE domain registry, has chaired the RIPE TLD Working Group, and has contributed to the foundation of CENTR. Niall is currently working on network and infrastructure development at UCD, is an active participant in the Irish ENUM Trial, and has recently been nominated Co-Chair of the RIPE ENUM Working Group. Niall holds BE and PhD degrees from the National University of Ireland, both of them in Electrical Engineering and awarded at University College Dublin. |

John Walsh was appointed as the Grid Manager of Grid-Ireland in July 2003. Grid-Ireland is based in the School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College, Dublin. He oversaw the establishment of a National Grid Infrastructure, which currently connects 18 higher level research institutes throughout Ireland and supports Virtual Organisations such as CosmoGrid and WebCom-G. In addition, he is involved in EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-Science), a pan-european Grid project spanning 32 Countries. |

Owen is a graduate of NUIG, UCC and recently of DCU where he obtained an M.Eng. in Telecommunications Engineering earlier this year. |

Louis Twomey has spent the last 15 years working in the IT industry. In the early stages of his career, he was heavily involved in a number of projects in the research and academic community, including the implementation of the national network interconnecting the Regional Technical Colleges (RTCnet). He subsequently spent over 10 years as a networking and security consultant with Kerna Communications Ltd before returning to the research and education sector by joining HEAnet in early 2006. |

Dr Vincent Wade is Director of the Centre for Learning Technology in Trinity College Dublin and Research Director of the Knowledge and Data Engineering Research Group in the Computer Science Department in Trinity College Dublin. In 2002, he was awarded Fellowship of Trinity College for his contribution to research in knowledge driven systems. He is active in the research of virtual learning environments, adaptive multimedia systems for education, and management systems for networks and distributed systems. In the area of e-Learning his research has focused on virtual collaborative learning environments, learner centric adaptive systems, re-use of digital learning resources and virtual communities. He currently leads several EU and nationally funded research projects in these areas. His research work and publications span both theoretical and applied research, and has authored over one hundred and twenty technical papers in refereed international research journals and conferences. He has received six ‘best paper’ awards for publications in IEEE and AACE international Conferences, and is currently guest editor for IEEE Internet Computing Special Issue on Distance Education. Vincent is the co-ordinator of the National Digital Learning Repository Project which is a three year project involving seven universities in Ireland, all Institutes of Technology (and their associated teaching colleges), HEA and HEAnet. |

He received his Bachelor of Engineering summa cum laude from Georgia Institute of Technology and his Masters of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. |

Mike McGrath was a founder of Crannog Software in 1998 and has over 20 years experience in the IT industry. With Sean McNamee, now Crannog Software’s CEO, Mike co-founded LAN Communications in 1993, a company that was ’s first Cisco Gold partner and which has been the largest indigenous datacomms reseller since 1999. LAN Communications was sold to eircom (main Irish carrier) in 1999. Mike then built and developed, in LAN Communications, the largest network operations centre in , supporting some of the most significant businesses and government departments, both nationally and internationally. Mike has worked in and with carrier, ISP, mobile and large-scale enterprises during his career. As Crannog’s Chief Technology Officer and visionary, he works today with a rapidly-growing development team to provide network management solutions that recognise the needs of different audiences. In 1996 Mike achieved the accolade of becoming the first accredited Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (C. C. I. E.) in Ireland. |

Ann Doyle serves as Internet2 Manager for Arts and Humanities Initiatives. Her accomplishments include working with campuses across the nation to produce master classes and performance events enabled by high-speed networking. She has been the executive producer of the two largest collaborations in the performing arts over Internet2; "Virtual Halloween at the Rialto" on Georgia State University's campus, and "Cultivating Communities: Dance in the Digital Age" on the University of Southern California campus. Ann has been a featured speaker at Europe's TERENA Networking conference 2006 and the GARR Academic and Research Network conference 2005, the International Council of Fine Arts Deans, the National Association of Schools of Music, the Los Angeles Museum Educators Consortium, and numerous U.S. campuses interested in the application of Internet2 in performing arts and humanities education. Ann has a Master's degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Michigan. She is also known in the greater Detroit metropolitan area for her career as a singer/songwriter and recording artist. |
