Dr. Jimmy Devins was appointed Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and the Department of Education and Science (with special responsibility for Science, technology and Innovation) on the 13th of May2008. He was first elected to Dail Eireann in May 2002. He was appointed Minister of State in July 2007. Previously he served as Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children with responsibility for Disability and Mental Health between July 2007 and May 2008. He was a member of Sligo County County Council from 1991-2003. Former member of the Border Regional Authority, the Border, Midlands & Western Assembly and former Chairman of the Institute of Technology, Sligo.

 

Tom Boland
Chief Executive of the Higher
Education Authority

Update

Tom Boland is Chief Executive of the Higher Education Authority (HEA) since January 2004. The HEA is a statutory body established to allocate public funding to Irish higher education institutions; to oversee performance of the higher education and research sector generally and to advise the Minister for Education and Science on the development of the sector.

Prior to his appointment to the HEA, Mr. Boland was Director of Strategic Policy in the Department of Education and Science, a role he combined with that of Head of Legal Services and Legal Adviser to the Department.

He is chairperson of the Board of HEAnet (a public sector company which provides high quality internet services to the Irish education and research system). He is a member of the Boards of the Fulbright Commission, Science Foundation Ireland and the Central Applications Office. He is also a member of the Governing Board of IMHE (a sub-programme within the OECD Education Directorate).

He holds degrees in Civil Engineering and Law and was called to the Irish Bar in 1987.

 

John Boland

The New HEAnet Strategic Plan 2008 - 2012

John Boland is the Chief Executive Officer of HEAnet, Ireland's National Education & Research Network. He was appointed to this position in October 1997 when HEAnet was incorporated as a limited company on behalf of the Higher Education Sector.

Prior to 1997 he worked as Systems and Networks Manager in the Computer Services Department of Dublin City University.

Prior to joining DCU John worked in industry with a number of international companies including Marconi Communications Systems in the UK, Motorola Information Systems in the US and the UK and Westinghouse in Australia.

He holds a B. E. in electronic engineering from University College Dublin and has embarked on an M. Sc. in Computer Applications.

As CEO of HEAnet John is responsible for the development of world-class Internet services for education and research in Ireland.

Currently John is a member of DANTE's Board of Directors, and represents HEAnet on the GÉANT N.R.E.N. Policy Committee - a collaboration between the European National Research Networks and the European Commission, delivering advanced pan-European research and education networking. He is also a member of the TERENA General Assembly (Trans European Research and Education Networking Association) and on the international task force for Internet2.

 

Danuta Gray

"Anytime, Anywhere" HEAnet and O2 Mobile Broadband

Danuta Gray is Chief Executive of TelefÓnica O2 Ireland, the second largest mobile communications company in the Irish market, with over 1.6 million customers. Danuta has held this position since 2001. Following the acquisition of O2 by Spanish operator in TelefÓnica February 2006, Danuta was appointed to the TelefÓnica Europe plc board. She is a board member of Irish Permanent TSB and in August 2006 was appointed non-executive Director of Aer Lingus by the then Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen T.D. Danuta has also been appointed Chairperson to the board of children's charity Barretstown Gang Camp. With over 15 years experience in the mobile industry, Danuta joined O2 Ireland from BT Europe in Germany, where she held the position of Director and was responsible for managing BT's investment in VIAG Interkom (now TelefÓnica O2 Germany GmbH & Co OHG). Prior to this Danuta was General Manager at BT Mobile in the UK, having previously held a number of management positions in companies throughout the USA, Singapore and Switzerland. Danuta studied at the University of Lausanne and the London Business School. She holds a BSc in BioPhysics from the University of Leeds and an MBA in Executive Development Programmes.

 

Pat Larkin

"Anytime, Anywhere" HEAnet and O2 Mobile Broadband

Pat Larkin is Chief Executive of Ward Solutions Ireland since 2004. Ward Solutions are a leading systems integrator, security and consultancy provider based in Citywest Dublin Ireland. Pat and Ward Solutions have extensive experience in both the Higher Education and Research and Telecommunications Sectors nationally and internationally. In November 2007 HEAnet commissioned Ward Solutions to develop their Wireless Strategy for the sector. The report involved extensive consultation nationally and internationally within the sector and within the telecommunications industry. The strategy was delivered in aggressive timelines, presented to and endorsed by the HEAnet board in April 2008, resulting in procurement and delivery of the Phase 1 of the strategy by HEAnet in September 2008. Prior to his role as Chief Executive Pat held the roles of Business Development Manager of Ward Solutions and Principal Consultant Ward Solutions. In 2001 Pat was appointed Chief Executive Officer of First Ask an Irish and US based on line Expertise Community and e-Learning provider start up. Prior to joining Ward Solutions Pat was ICT Operations Manager and Level 1 Data Security Officer for the Communications and Information Services Corps of the Irish Defence Forces where he served both Nationally and Internationally with the United Nations.

Klaas Wierenga works for Cisco as Consulting Engineer in the office of the CTO. Prior to joining Cisco, Klaas has worked for over 12 years at SURFnet, the Dutch Research and Education Network focusing on mobility and identity and access management. He is the creator of eduroam and chair of the TERENA Taskforce on Mobility as well as a member of ECAM, TERENA's middleware coordination group. At Cisco he continues to work in the same interest areas, and with the NREN community.

 

Dr. Anthony Keane

Honeypots and Darknets - What are they good for?

Anthony Keane has a BSc (Physics) from University College Galway, an MSc (Astrophysics) from University College London and PhD from University College Dublin. Before joining ITB in 1999, Anthony worked in the Cosmic Physics Section of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, as a doctorate research student and later as a post doctorate researcher. He is currently working as a lecturer and principle investigator in the Network Security & Computer Forensics group at the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown.

 

Rob Gallagher

Rob Gallagher joined HEAnet in 2006 as a Network Engineer in the Managed Network Services (MNS) team. He is primarily involved in the areas of security and system administration. Prior to joining the company, Rob received an MSc in Security & Forensic Computing from DCU and spent 2 years working for Kerna Communications as a systems and network engineer. Rob also holds an EC Council Ethical Hacking & Forensics qualification and is an ISO 27001 Lead Auditor.

 

Marion Palmer

Creating Futures - working at the convergence of arts, technology and enterprise at IADT

Marion is Head of the Department of Learning Sciences at IADT. She is chair of the Institute's Teaching and Learning Committee and responsible for the Institute's Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy, including elearning. Prior to becoming Head of Department Marion was a lecturer at IADT, teaching instructional design, physics, and science and working in science education.
Marion worked as a teacher of Physics, Science, Maths, Technology and Computers in schools in Dublin and London for many years. She has a Physics degree and a Masters in Education. Marion is a member of Women in Technology and Science (WITS) and a former chair of the Irish Science Teachers. Association (ISTA). Marion is a member of the Council of the Higher Education and training Awards Council (HETAC) and is completing a doctorate in education at Queen's University Belfast on teaching in Institutes of Technology.

Paul Mullen joined HEAnet in 2006, and is a Systems Administrator in the Schools team. He is involved in the provision and maintenance of services to primary and post-primary schools and the running of services on the School Broadband Network. He is also involved in the Middleware and Storage working groups within HEAnet.

Here come the Internet cops - How ISPs and others are being required to police their users

TJ McIntyre is Lecturer in Law, University College Dublin where he specialises in issues involving information technology law and civil liberties. He obtained his BCL in University College Dublin achieving First Class Honours and obtained an LLM (with Merit) in University College London. He qualified as a Barrister in the Honorable Society of King's Inns, Dublin in 1998 and was admitted as a Member of the New York Bar in 2007. He has also been admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in Ireland and practices as a consultant with Merrion Legal Solicitors where he advises on matters such as online defamation and domain name disputes. He is chairman of the independent civil liberties group Digital Rights Ireland and regularly appears in the national media discussing issues of law and technology.

Glenn Wearen recently joined HEAnet with responsibility for federated access. Prior to joining HEAnet, Glenn held a number of positions focusing on single-sign-on, federated access, and identity lifecycle management with HP, Baltimore Technologies and Fidelity Investments. Glenn holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Applications (Software Engineering) from DCU and is an ISC2 Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

Paul Caskey is a Technology Architect in The University of Texas System Administration's Office of System-Wide Information Services and is the lead technologist for the U.T. System's Identity Management Initiative. He has primary responsibility for the development and operation of the U.T. System Identity Management Federation and is the chair of the federation's Technical Advisory Group. Paul has an extensive background in networking, security, and I.T. infrastructure and is currently active in both local/wide area networking as well as a variety of identity management areas, including registries, directories, provisioning, credentialing, federation, PKI, and application integration, having done talks and presentations on these topics at many workshops and conferences in the U.S., Asia, and Europe. Paul has a Master of Science degree in Management Information Systems from Texas A & M University.

Josh Howlett is the technical lead for JANET(UK)'s Authentication, Authorisation and Identity programme. This programme includes activities such as the JANET Roaming Service, the UK's instance of eduroam,the UK Access Management Federation and the OpenSEA Alliance's 802.1X supplicant. Josh participates in a variety of international collaborative activities, including TERENA's Mobility and EMC2 task-forces, TERENA ECAM, Internet2 MACE, GN2 JRA5 and the Trusted Computing Group's Trusted Network Connect Working Group.

Orla joined HEAnet in 2000 to create HEAnet's IPv6 testbed. After a career break during which she completed a M.Eng.Sc in IPv6 Firewalling in the Hamilton Institute (NUI Maynooth), she returned to work in Network Operations. In December 2006 she moved to her current position as part of the Managed Network Services team. Orla works mainly on the services network infrastructure, the services and Co-location PoP, BGP, IPv6, and Multicast.

Second Life - Brave New Frontier or Fleeting Gimmick?

Cathal McCauley was recently appointed University Librarian at NUI Maynooth. He was formerly Head of Reader Services in UCD Library. In that role he was responsible for the delivery and development of the Reader Services functions across all five libraries in UCD. Cathal has also previously worked in the Science, Medical and Business sections of the UCD Library service. Prior to joining UCD Cathal worked for the management consultants FGS (Farrell Grant Sparks) where he held a variety of posts including director of consulting. Cathal's current research interests include the harnessing of new technologies and new service models to enhance the library experience for staff and readers. At UCD he was responsible for a range of service innovations including UCD being the first academic library to provide an instant messaging reference service, enter Second Life and to have a presence in Facebook.

Second Life - Brave New Frontier or Fleeting Gimmick?

Peter Clarke is a member of Library IT Services at UCD. Previously he has worked for a number of private sector companies in Ireland and France. In his current role, Peter provides hardware and software support to all UCD Library staff. Since joining UCD in 2006 he has been involved in a number of initiatives within the Library, such as Second Life, RFID, EzProxy implementation, Express Service, Laptop Loan Scheme and Instant Messaging.

 

Alexandre Passant

Social Media: Why and how to take advantage of it

Alexandre Passant is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Digital Enterprise Research Institute, NUI Galway. His research activities focus around the Semantic Web and Social Software, especially how to make those two technological fields interact and benefit from each other, in order to provide a socially-enabled buy machine-readable Web. He is the co-author of SIOC, a model to represent activities of online communities on the Semantic Web, author of MOAT, a framework to let people tag their content using Semantic Web technologies, and involved in various related applications. Prior joining DERI, he was a PhD student at Université Paris-Sorbonne and applied his research work on "Enterprise 2.0" at Electricité De France.

 

Marie Reddan

Digitisation: "How will I read this conference in 25 years time"- A strategic role for HEAnet in digital preservation

Marie Reddan has just recently resigned her post as Librarian of the James Hardiman Library at NUI Galway, having previously worked as Deputy Librarian at the University of Limerick. A former Chair of CONUL (Consortium of National and University Libraries) and the IUA Librarians' Group, she has also served on a number of national Committees including the CHEST Ireland Management Board and the Library Council. She also served on the UK SCONUL Executive Board and was a member of that group's Advisory Committee on Space. She continues to be a member of the National Library of Ireland's Reader's Advisory Committee. She is a Director of IRIS Ltd and a former director of HEAnet Ltd. Most recently she chaired the HSS Infrastructures sub-committee of the RIA's Expert Group on the Humanities and Social Sciences. She co-ordinated the SIF funded project on Information Literacy Skills - a partnership of NUI Galway, UCC and TCD and is still involved in an advisory capacity with this project. Her professional interests include scholarly publishing and management of e-resources, information support to researchers, the Open Access movement, collaborative resource sharing, information literacy and digitisation.

 

Don Gourley

Digitisation: "How will I read this conference in 25 years time"- A strategic role for HEAnet in digital preservation

Don Gourley is the Information Technology Manager for the Digital Humanities Observatory, a project of the Royal Irish Academy. Previously, Don was the Director of Information Technology for the Washington Research Library Consortium. In addition to managing IT services, he served as the lead architect for a number of library information systems, such as a personalised portal for library patrons, an intra-consortium borrowing and document delivery service, and a repository for managing and preserving digital collections. Prior to WRLC, Don managed software projects and IT services at the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Maryland, and before that worked as a software design engineer with Hewlett-Packard. He holds a BA in Mathematics from the University of Virginia and an MS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado. Don's professional interests include digital library development, web systems architecture, and data & digital asset management.

Bernard Roche is the lead solution architect in Dell's virtualisation and consolidation practice. Covering the Ireland market, Bernard's primary focus is to work with customers in relation to new technologies and to help to address the challenges faced by customers related to their IT environment. Bernard has 15 years experience in the IT industry working in pre-sales, account management, software development, hardware design and research; he has a B.Sc in Computer Science from TCD and is currently writing up his PhD.

Institutes of Technology Connectivity Update

Owen Byrne joined HEAnet in 2005. He has been involved with the planning and implementation of the ITnet/HEAnet integration project and recent iterations of the National Backbone Extension programme. Owen is a graduate of NUIG, UCC and DCU where he obtained an M.Eng. in Telecommunications Engineering.
