Following agreement between the IUA Council, the HEAnet Board and Maynooth University, the IReL operation will transfer from HEAnet to Maynooth University effective from 1 March 2016.
The decision to transfer IReL management to the University sector comes on foot of IUA Council analysis of the future research library needs of the University sector and, in particular, the strategic ambitions for the IReL service in the years ahead.
IReL has become a vital element in the Irish research landscape since it was established in 2004. Through its nationally funded consortium subscriptions, IReL affords access to online information resources, including e-journals, databases, e-books and reference collections.
The transition to Maynooth University will ensure the on-going provision of this critical library service for IReL members, with no interruption to services or staff changes, simply a new office location. The IReL Service is managed by two dedicated staff, an IReL Manager and an IReL Officer who will be located on the Maynooth Campus, with back-office HR and financial support also transferring to Maynooth University.
IReL will continue to be funded through the HEA (Higher Education Authority), SFI (Science Foundation Ireland), DJEI (Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation) and the IUA Council (Irish Universities Association).
