Low cost broadband for students in new O2 / HEAnet deal

O2 and HEAnet offer discounted student pricing in time for new college term
O2 today announced that is has signed a new one year deal with HEAnet, Ireland's National Education and Research Network, to offer discounted mobile broadband for students. Students can get O2’s Mobile Broadband service for only €9.99 per month for a 10GB monthly data allowance on a 12 month contract.
HEAnet provides networking services to all Irish universities, Institutes of Technology and other higher education and research organisations. This student offer is being rolled out to all participating HEAnet client institutions.
Commenting John Boland, CEO of HEAnet said: “Innovation in education and research is the key to Ireland’s future growth and success, and HEAnet’s wireless broadband strategy aims to support this goal. As part of this strategy the deal HEAnet has brokered with O2 provides a great opportunity to make wireless broadband more accessible and affordable to students, researchers and academic staff within the education and research community.”
Also commenting, Eoghan Patton, Business Delivery Manager, Telefonica O2 Ireland, said, “We understand the financial pressures students are under and this is especially relevant in the current economic climate. We are delighted to be working with HEAnet to make this offer available."
Students can sign up to the discounted Mobile Broadband offer in any O2 retail store. O2 will also be bringing a Mobile Broadband roadshow to all participating HEAnet institutions throughout September, at which students will also be able to sign up to the new offer.
Earlier this year O2 announced that it plans to further upgrade its mobile broadband service to offer significantly higher speed internet access. Key benefits of the network upgrade for customers will be significantly improved download speeds (up to 21Mbps) as well as faster uplink speeds of up to 5.7Mbps. O2 currently has over 146,000 mobile broadband customers on its network. To date, O2 has invested over €1 billion in its network in Ireland.
