HEAnet Traffic records broken yet again.

Streaming of the Budget pushes HEAnet's network traffic to new heights.
While the viewing figures for the previous Budget in October 2008 were extremely high [Press Release], HEAnet has once again managed to break its own network traffic record. As more and more people turned to the Internet to view the supplementary Budget, the HEAnet streaming infrastructure pushed out a peak of 5.13Gbit/s of traffic. The majority of this data was routed via the Irish Internet Neutral Exchange (INEX) which resulted in traffic across the exchange breaking previous records and hitting a high of 7.2Gbit/s. The traffic graphs below illustrate both of these peaks.
This amount of traffic was generated due to the 15,000 unique viewers who watched the proceedings in Dail Eireann. However it wasn't only Internet users in Ireland who were interested in the Minister's speech. During this Budget, only 78% of viewers were based in Ireland. The next largest concentration of viewers was in the UK (10%) and there was also reasonable interest from the United States (3.5%). This visitor distribution is shown in the graphs below.
