Security Scanning

Description: What is it?

The HEAnet Network Scanning Service is a vulnerability and risk assessment service that will allow HEAnet clients to scan their IP networks for security holes which, if not fixed, could become serious threats to their organisation's network security.

The service will allow those tasked with Network Management in the member institutions to probe their network's Internet-facing devices to identify those that may be vulnerable to attack from the internet, and to look for security holes and bugs in host operating systems and application software that are the source of today's hacker attacks.

The in-built reporting mechanisms provide users with the ability to generate detailed reports which will contain a list of discovered vulnerabilities and their associated risk levels. The HEAnet Network Scanning Service is provided as part of HEAnet's service to clients and is covered by existing Client Service Agreements.

Why do I need it?

Vulnerabilities provide a path for the hacker, cracker, or script kiddie to penetrate your front gate. Vulnerability testing helps identify those paths, and provides advice on how to lock out those unwanted visitors.

When addressing security concerns in today's environment, one cannot afford to scan a network once and rest assured that the network is protected from the Internet - You should scan your network at least once every month. Lower the risk of malicious security breaches that can cause significant financial and reputational losses.

Conditions of usage

  • The service is provided for the purpose of identification of network vulnerabilities on the client network only.
  • Certain assessment methods if applied have the potential to cause denial of service to your network / hosts, as such use of this service is entirely at your own risk.
  • The user assumes full responsibility for any loss or damage resulting from use of this service.
  • The service will not be used for the purpose of scanning any third party network.

  • Usage is restricted to employees of the HEAnet member institutions only.
  • Users must abide by the HEAnet Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP).
