Lecturer (Fixed Term, Part Time 0.5) in Earth and Ocean Sciences

(1st September 2012 - 31st August 2014)



Applications are invited for a fixed-term appointment as Lecturer (Fixed Term, Part Time 0.5) in Earth and Ocean Sciences. The appointment will be for a two year term 1st September 2012 – 31st August 2014. Earth and Ocean Sciences is a discipline in the School of Natural Sciences, which also includes the disciplines of Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology and Zoology.


The successful candidate will contribute in the main, to chemical oceanography teaching across all four years of the Earth and Ocean Sciences and Marine Science degree programmes, but will be expected to establish a multidisciplinary approach to marine science teaching and research. He/she will be committed to research linked to the general areas of marine biogeochemistry and coastal and deep-sea oceanography (chemical/physical/ biological/geological) and should demonstrate an ability to contribute to existing research programmes within the EOS discipline as well as to the strategic research priorities of the School and University. The candidates will be encouraged to establish their own independently funded research programmes. A proven track record of excellence in both teaching and research in the relevant area is an advantage.


The successful applicant will hold a PhD in chemical/biological/geological oceanography prior to the start date and candidates with relevant teaching experience are encouraged to apply. He/she will be expected to contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate students as well as to supervising undergraduate fieldwork and laboratory work.


This is a 50% job-sharing post and actual working days may vary depending on teaching and research requirements.

Salary:            40,256 to € 56,782 pro rata per annum

€36,230 to €51,104 pro rata per annum (applicable to new entrants effective from January, 2011)


(This appointment will be made on the Lecturer (FT) scale in line with current Government pay policy)
