Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for an 18 month fixed-term contract position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Economics, in the Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit (SEMRU) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded through the Beaufort Marine Research Award, which is carried out under the Sea Change Strategy and the Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation (2006-2013), with the support of the Marine Institute, funded under the Marine Research Sub-Programme of the National Development Plan 2007–2013. This appointment is part of a strategic alliance between the NUI Galway (SEMRU - www.nuigalway.ie/semru/), Teagasc (www.teagasc.ie) and the Marine Institute (www.marine.ie), to develop a marine socio-economic analysis, modelling and forecasting capacity in Ireland.

 

Job Description:

The researcher will be employed to undertake research in the area of marine socio-economics. The Postdoctoral Researcher will work in an interdisciplinary environment with PhD students, post docs, research scientists, and faculty staff from NUI Galway, Teagasc and the Marine Institute and will assist in the training of other young researchers in the area of marine socio-economics. The Post-Doctoral Researcher will join the current SEMRU Team in examining a range of issues pertaining to the Irish Ocean Economy, the efficiency and competitiveness of marine sub-sectors in Ireland and the socio-economic impact of Irish and European marine related policy changes (see http://www.nuigalway.ie/semru/research.html). The specific work programme to be pursued will be determined considering the current SEMRU work programme and the specific skills and expertise brought by the successful Post-Doctoral Researcher. The researcher will also be expected to assist in writing up project proposals with the aim of generating future research funding. The post holder will be expected to present their work in oral format, at international project meetings and symposia as well as in related marine stakeholder fora. They will also be expected to collaborate on the production of written reports and of publications in the peer reviewed scientific literature and popular press. They will be based between SEMRU at NUI Galway and the Teagasc Rural Economy and Development Research Centre, just outside Galway in Athenry.  

 

Applicant’s Specifications:

Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant research area (e.g. Marine/Environmental Economics/Economics/Economic Modelling) and should have a minimum of 2 years relevant research experience. The candidate should also have experience in statistical analysis, modelling and forecasting and an interest in the application of these skills to the marine sector. Knowledge of the marine sector is desirable. Good oral and written communication skills in a variety of contexts are also important. Experience of statistical analysis of socio-economic data would also be desirable.

Salary Scale: €38,286 - €43,393 per annum. (Public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).
