HEAnet and Microsoft have established a 10G Private Network Interface (PNI) to Microsoft cloud services.
This connects HEAnet’s clients directly to the Microsoft Dublin data centre.
The link carries HEAnet client traffic relating to Azure, Office 365, Dynamics/CRM, Skype for Business and other Microsoft cloud based services.
The connection adds an extra layer of protection against DDoS attacks as a DDoS attack must originate from either of the two networks.
Both IPv4 and IPv6 are supported.
Separately, but in related news, HEAnet are also pleased to advise that HEAnet, together with its fellow NRENs, have negotiated an Azure data egress waiver with Microsoft which came into effect during May. Azure customers who are enrolled in an Education Solutions agreement are eligible for this program. These EES customers don’t have to do anything to get this benefit – there is no special contract to sign or agreement to enter into. Once the benefit becomes active in May, Microsoft will automatically remove the egress charges for EES customers, as long as they make up less than 15% of their total Azure consumption bill.
