MH-19 Research Engineer - Energy Harvesting/Power Management

University College Cork, Tyndall National Institute invites applications for a number of appointments as an Energy Harvesting Research Engineers to design, develop and deploy energy harvesting solutions for Tyndall’s Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) mote platform. This is required to support 2 funded (EI and EU H2020) Research programs which Tyndall plans to start in collaboration with Irish and EU partners. These projects require Tyndall to provide energy harvesting solutions for WSN motes with conditional monitoring capability to improve the reliability and efficiency of the monitored devices. These are strategic project in alignment with Tyndall’s strategy in hosting ‘ICT for energy efficiency’ projects in collaboration with other Irish academic and industry partners. The contract is for a minimum of 12 months and will be subject to extension depending on candidate performance and the awarding to Tyndall of similar research contracts.

Tyndall National Institute (Tyndall), is Ireland’s largest research centre, specialising in defined areas of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Reporting to the project Principal Investigator, the candidate will:

  • Be responsible for the specification, design, modelling, development and system integration of energy harvesting solutions for WSN hardware platforms compatible for multiple ambient energy sources.

  • Identify, design, model and implement innovative power management and storage circuits.

  • Integrate conditional monitoring and self-start circuits.

  • Liaise with CMOS circuit designers and system integrators as required.

  • Travel to project meetings, project partner sites and any other deployment sites to present technical results and project updates and support of the energy harvesting hardware development

  • Provide advice and technical support to the other project partners in the inter-operability of the WSN device with various sensors, drivers, meters, middleware applications, security protocols, etc developed/integrated in the research program.

  • Maintain engineering logs (hard copy and software) of all activities including engineering documents, meetings, reviews, results, IP generated, project correspondence, etc in accordance to Tyndall’s ISO9000 procedures.

  • Execute duties in accordance with terms and conditions of the project consortium agreements.

  • Show leadership within Tyndall in defining energy harvesting, power management and storage solutions.

  • Manage the technical elements of the projects defined.

Essential Criteria  

  • The ideal candidate will have a Masters or PhD in a relevant field with at least 3 years of postgraduate hands-on engineering experience in energy harvesting techniques, design and systems integration preferably with experience in integration with WSN demonstrators in an industrial context.

  • The candidate needs to be practical, assertive and achievement orientated.

  • Good self-management, report writing skills and communication skills for interaction with project partners is essential.

  • It is also essential that technical and project status reports are delivered in a timely manner in accordance with project terms.

  • The successful applicant should have a degree in Electronic or Electrical Engineering or a related discipline and postgraduate or industry experience in an area relevant to the above theme. Authorship of quality publications and/or patents and management of multiple partner IP would be an advantage as would practical knowledge and experience of electronic system design.

  • Excellent communication skills are essential.

  • A proven ability to work well in a team and to ability to work on his/her own initiative to solve technical, logistical and system integrations is critical.

  • The need to work flexible hours is required and to be adaptable in working practice is essential.

Desirable Criteria

Some experience in design and deployment of any combination of the following would be helpful:

  • Basic power electronics circuits and topologies

  • Analog circuit modelling using MATHLAB/SIMIULINK or similar tools.

  • Wireless Systems
