The Department of Humanities is now seeking to establish a panel of suitably qualified candidates with experience in the area of Applied Social Studies/Social Care, who are eligible for registration with the Social Care Registration Board.
Experience and qualifications in the following areas would be valuable; Psychology, Sociology, Research Supervision, Professional Social Care Supervision and Development, and Placement Supervision, with the expertise and interests to complement and further develop the activities of the School.
The preferred applicants will have a strong research record; will be able to demonstrate a commitment to course development both full-time and part-time; and will be in a position to play a significant role in the application and development of innovative teaching and learning methodologies in Humanities education.
The position calls for a highly motivated and experienced individuals who will contribute to the development, implementation and delivery of courses in the School of Humanities.
The appointees will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration.
The tasks and duties of the post will include:
The appointee should carry out such duties as are assigned in accordance with collective agreements arrived at from time to time and authorised by the Minister of Education & Skills including but not limited to:-
Teaching such assigned classes as deemed appropriate by management of the University, day or evening, up to six hundred and thirty hours per annum including supervision of post-graduate students where appropriate. There will be a norm of eighteen class contact hours per week, which may be varied from sixteen to twenty in consultation with the lecturer. Where a lecturer is supervising a Tutor/Demonstrator, a reduction in teaching hours will be applied on the basis of one-hour reduction per three hours demonstration/tutorials supervised
Carrying out assessments, monitoring and evaluation of examinations work, and providing an academic and consultative support to students in their learning activities
Providing academic input on existing and new courses and course development
Engaging in research, consultancy and development work as appropriate
Participating in committees appropriate to courses and meetings convened by management
Maintaining appropriate records and making available information as required by management
Engaging in promotion including student recruitment as appropriate
Participating in development, implementation and maintenance of academic quality assurance arrangements
Participating in appropriate activities necessary to the development of their Department/School and the University
Directing and supervising the work of Tutor/Demonstrator and taking academic responsibility for the academic standards of this work
The performance of these duties will require attendance in addition to class contact hours during the normal working week. The appointee shall carry out lawful instructions of the President or authorised Officer and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister for Education & Skills.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the appropriate mix of knowledge, experience, skills, talent and abilities as outlined below:
- A first or second class honours degree with Psychology / Applied Social Studies as a major component or an approved equivalent qualification (Essential)
- Fluent written and spoken English (Essential)
- Successful candidates will ideally also have a relevant higher qualification (Masters or PhD) or equivalent professional qualification
- A postgraduate qualification in Teaching and Learning or similar
- Knowledge of programme development and implementation
- Candidates should be familiar with areas from fundamental skills through to NQAI Level 9 topics
- Three years’ appropriate experience subsequent to obtaining an honours primary degree in a relevant discipline (Essential)
- Specialist experience in the areas of: (Essential)
o Working with vulnerable groups
o Research Supervision
o Professional Social Care Supervision and Development
o Social Care Placement Supervision
o Challenging Behaviour
o Communications and Collaboration
- Demonstrable teaching experience
- Demonstrable experience of academic course administration, proven track record in teaching innovation and engagement
- Relevant industry experience
Skills, talents & abilities:
- Strong organisational skills and proficiency in MS Office
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written. Communication with students is particularly important
- Experience of e-learning education management systems such as Moodle
- Flexible and ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
- An enthusiastic team player with the ability to network with colleagues and other stakeholders.
- Good communication and problem solving skills
- Evidence of self-reflective practice
Terms and Conditions of Employment:

The main terms and conditions of employment are as follows:
Tenure:The post is being offered on a permanent whole-time basis.
Location:This post is currently located in TU Dublin - Blanchardstown Campus.
Salary: The Assistant Lecturer Salary Scale is:
• €41,533 – €51,502
• €37,482 – €51,502 (New Entrants)
Appointments will be made at the appropriate point on the appropriate scale. Salary may be adjusted from time-to-time in line with Government pay policy.
Hours of work: This is a whole time post. In addition to teaching hours (up to 18 hours per week), attendance is required from Monday to Friday.
