PMO-11 Senior Business Development Manager – IPIC

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) at Tyndall National Institute seeks a dynamic and customer focused Business Development Manager. We are a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded Research Centre that brings together over 160 researchers from the Tyndall National Institute, Cork Institute of Technology, Dublin City University, Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork to develop new light enabled technologies. Our work focuses on developing the next generation of highly-compact and miniaturised photonics technologies in order to tackle some of society’s greatest challenges, including revolutionising the speed of data transfer for the continued growth of the internet, delivering new smart medical devices for improved patient outcome and developing instrumentation for point-of-care diagnostics and wearable devices.

We have an ambitious plan to grow IPIC by 40% over the period 2019 to 2021 and as a result are seeking to expand our team to include a dedicated Business Development Manager. The successful candidate will lead and grow IPIC’s industry engagement programme, including the expansion of our industry partner network, and will be responsible for the delivering the associated income targets and KPIs. In addition you will co-ordinate IPIC’s commercialisation activities, including the creation of start-up companies, with the objective to leverage our leading edge science to deliver economic impact in Ireland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage IPIC’s industry engagement programme and secure direct industry cash income of €2M per year and in-kind contributions of €1.5M per year;

  • Work closely with IPIC’s Principal Investigators across our host institutions (Tyndall, CIT, DCU, TCD and UCC) to identify, engage and secure new industry partners through collaborative research projects;

  • In conjunction with the legal office, lead IPIC’s research project contract negotiations with third parties, in particular with industry parties.

  • Oversee all industry projects to ensure delivery and that the Centre fulfils its contractual objections, such as confidentiality and technology transfer;

  • Coordinate the monthly IPIC Contracts & IP Committee meetings with key internal partners, such as Business Development, TTO, Finance and Legal;

  • Organise the Annual IPIC Industry Workshop;

  • Continuously monitor and report progress on contract negotiations and industry projects;

  • Coordinate IPIC’s commercialisation activities including licensing and start-up creation, in partnership with the Head of Operations, UCC TTO Director and Tyndall Commercial Director, to deliver a minimum of 4 licenses per year and 1 start-up every 2 years;

  • Deliver IPIC’s entrepreneurial training programmes, including the IPIC Bootcamp;

  • Support the development of the Photonics Ireland National Technology Platform and participate in associated national and international events and trade shows;

  • Support the preparation of Annual Reports, Governance and Science Advisory meetings/reporting and SFI site reviews;

  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required;

  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system;

  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards;

  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • Minimum of an MSc in a physical sciences or engineering subject

  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in research focused organisations, including experience of working in or working with industry

  • Extensive experience in business development and R&D contract negotiations, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience negotiating and closing R&D contracts between research performing organisations, multinational companies and SMEs (including a number valued in excess of €0.5M)

  • Demonstrated experience and a proven track record in IP management (including patenting) and commercialisation

  • Demonstrated experience of working with senior academics

  • High energy and flexibility to conduct extensive national and international travel.

Desirable Criteria

  • PhD in a physical sciences or engineering subject

  • Experience of negotiation multi-million euro EU funded research projects including multiple academic and industry partners

  • A number of years’ experience working in industry

  • Technology background experience in photonics, microelectronics, communications or MedTech

  • Experience in one or more of the following: strategic planning, R&D innovation processes, and/or technology road mapping

  • Experience delivering entrepreneurial training courses

  • Experience of drafting national and international research proposals

  • Strong customer focus ethos and ability to identify and engage new industry partners

  • Experience of using CRM systems

  • Strong interpersonal and team working skills

This position may be appointed on Admin Grade 7 scale €68,858-€89,899.  In all instances the successful appointment will be at the first point of the scale.
