BOF-72 Senior Application Engineer – Team Leader Wearable & Biomechanical Systems (Wireless Sensor Networks Group)
Contract: Full Time/ Fixed Term (2 years)
The Wireless Sensor Network Group (WSN) at the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork is currently advertising for the position of Senior Application Engineer to lead a research team focused on Biomechanical Monitoring Systems.

As a result of funding secured under significant commercial and government investment in the area of wearable sensing systems for healthcare applications, the Wireless Sensor Network Group, Tyndall National Institute - University College Cork, invites applications for an appointment as a Senior Application Engineer to drive and manage a multidisciplinary research team and implement research-focused platforms in the area of Wearable sensor systems for Connected Health and Wellness monitoring.
Reporting to the WSN Head of Group or their nominee, this is an exciting opportunity to help define and implement advanced research projects in the disruptive, fast-moving, industrially relevant area of wearable systems. Working with the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Head of Group and aligned research teams, the successful candidate will lead and manage a team of multi-disciplinary industry oriented researchers with expertise in biomechanics, data analytics, microsystems technology and wireless sensors to execute and resource industry defined applied research projects and define a research roadmap for wearable systems in the Tyndall National Institute. The team comprises engineers, researchers and postgraduate students with various levels of experience and qualifications in a variety of engineering domains.
Activities will include applied research definition, funding, and implementation, hardware/software co-design of wearable embedded systems, and travel to international conferences, workshops, industry meetings, proposal project meetings, to strategically position Tyndall WSN as a world-leading advanced research group in wearable systems. The successful candidate will need to show high levels of initiative, self-management, achievement-orientation, and motivation.
- To develop and lead a program of advanced research in the area of wearable wireless systems and solutions for healthcare, with emphasis on Biomechanics.
- Establish Tyndall’s position internationally as a world leader in wearable wireless sensing systems.
- Work with Tyndall’s industry/research partners to identify their wireless sensing needs (disruptive healthcare technologies and applications).
- The candidate will be required to define, resource, lead and implement disruptive research projects in the system specification, design and deployment of embedded wireless sensing systems.
- To conduct and lead the following research activities, including planning, funding, recruitment, organising, conducting, and communicating research studies within the overall scope of applied research projects.
- To coordinate and perform a variety of independent and team activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation and interpretation of information/results.
- To undertake tasks which will include recording results and preparing reports, including conclusions and recommendations. Application of qualitative and quantitative research techniques to establish wearable health.
- To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities in order to develop appropriate research and leadership skills and competencies.
- To carry out administrative and project management work to support the program of research and ensure all project deliverables and milestones are achieved in a timely manner.
- To engage in management and mentoring of team members research activities and their personal development
- To disseminate project outputs, through the interpretation of results and the preparation of manuscripts for publication, including where appropriate public engagement and outreach activities.
- Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities.
- Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
- Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.
- Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
- A post-graduate (Masters) degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline
- > 5 years’ experience in wearable embedded smart systems
- A proven ability to independently take on projects and carry them out from initial requirements to final preproduction prototype stage
- Experience with sensor system development, integration and test
- Good analytical and computer skills relevant to embedded systems including Data Analytics and embedded data fusion algorithms
- Experience in Test and characterisation of embedded systems using appropriate lab-equipment
- Proven project management skills including scheduling, budgeting and delivery of defined milestones and deliverables
- Proven capability to secure the financial viability of the biomechanics team through successfully funded proposals in a relevant area
- A demonstrated capability in the delivery of advanced research projects
- Capability of effectively leading and managing teams to deliver innovative solutions
- Excellent communication skills.
- Industrial or mechanical design capabilities and a knowledge of Design for Manufacturing practices
- Experience in embedded wireless systems hardware and software design and development
- Experience in standards-based wireless and embedded system protocols
- Experience in standard sensor interface protocols
- Experience in the typical tradeoffs involved in developing sensor systems for multiple application domains is an asset.
Appointment may be made on the Grade 6 Admin III Scale (B) €49,181- €58,719. In all instances the successful appointment will be at the first point of the scale.
