GÉANT Announced the Publication of the OCRE 2024 Tender for Large-scale Procurement of Commercial Cloud Services
GÉANT has announced the publication of the OCRE (Open Clouds for Research and Education) 2024 tender for large-scale procurement of commercial cloud services offerings for its pan-European Research and Education community. OCRE 2024 will be the third iteration of GÉANT’s flagship cloud frameworks that, since 2016, have enabled easy, convenient, and compliant consumption of commercial cloud services for R&E institutions across Europe.
OCRE 2020 already plays a crucial role in advancing research and innovation by making cloud computing resources more accessible and affordable to Irish institutions and researchers. The current framework is very popular with HEAnet Clients and reduces the barriers to access public cloud services.
The HEAnet Brokerage Services Team acts as an intermediary between Irish R&E institutions and commercial cloud service providers under the OCRE 2020 / 2020 IaaS+ Framework. HEAnet Brokerage Services Manager, Garvan McFeeley, is also a key member of the OCRE 2024 project team and has contributed to the development of the OCRE 2024 tender.

HEAnet, in collaboration with 38 other National Research and Education Networks (NREN’s) across Europe, executed a declaration of Participation and actively involved their respective national communities in the procurement process of commercial cloud services via the CORE 2024 tender.
The OCRE 2024 tender builds on the successful experiences of the 2016 IaaS and 2020 IaaS+ (OCRE) frameworks, and aims to broaden their scope and ambition, procuring a wide portfolio of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions.
The OCRE 2024 Framework agreements give institutions the opportunity to streamline their procurement process, thereby saving valuable time and resources. Additionally, it enables them to reduce egress/ingress charges, benefit from discounts, and many other advantages.
OCRE 2024 Framework agreements are expected to be in place near the end of 2024 and will run for a period of five years.
