In 2010 almost 90 percent of students in UCD report owning laptops yet usage of the computer labs on campus remains relatively high. Are computer labs still necessary in a world where laptops, iPad, iPods, smart phones and wifi access is becoming ubiquitous? Is the traditional layout of a lab which maximizes the amount of equipment that can be put into a given space rather than the creation of a comfortable or stimulating learning environment suitable for mobile devices still valid?
