This talk will outline some of the key considerations for IT Managers/CIO’s with respect to moving college IT Services to Cloud based services. The paper will look at the experience of college’s in the US that have embarked on a strategy of moving to the cloud, In particular College’s such as Cornell, Harvard, Stanford and Columbia and other EDUCUASE members. The talk will first look at the key question facing IT Managers/CIO’s when moving to cloud technology. Secondly, it looks at some of the barriers currently inhibiting progress to the cloud. Finally the talk will address some of the common cloud services employed by US universities, collaborating to drive out cost and maximise synergies. The Cloud is here to stay; it is therefore incumbent on the IT leadership across the sector to understand the optimum cloud strategy and to start to build the skills, governance and business case to enable a smooth transition.
