HEAnet is proud to join GÉANT in supporting the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking’s (EuroHPC JU) ambition to craft a world-leading high-performance computing (HPC) ecosystem across Europe.
EuroHPC JU awarded GÉANT a contract, valued at up to €60 million, to design, implement, and operate a next-generation, ultra-high-bandwidth, secure interconnect infrastructure. This four-year contract initiates the deployment of a federated European HPC network that will interconnect EuroHPC supercomputers, national supercomputers, AI Factories, quantum computing facilities, and research/data centres across Europe.
GÉANT and its network of National Research & Education Networks (NRENs) are uniquely placed to deliver this mission, drawing on decades of experience in providing resilient, high-capacity infrastructure to the research and education sector. This new partnership between GÉANT and the EuroHPC JU will deliver a truly joined-up pan-European HPC platform, where borders are not impediments to collaboration, facilitating greater innovation and technological breakthroughs at both national and international levels.
Initial deployment is expected to commence in the coming months, with the first user-facing services becoming available in 2026. These services will scale progressively to connect all EuroHPC supercomputers and associated AI / quantum sites.
By underpinning state-of-the-art research with world-class connectivity, this initiative will accelerate innovation and scientific discovery at both national and international levels. It strengthens Europe’s position in HPC, AI, quantum technologies, and digital sovereignty.
We look forward to working closely alongside GÉANT and fellow NRENs to deliver this transformative infrastructure, enabling Ireland’s researchers and institutions to fully benefit from seamless, high-speed, secure access to the European HPC ecosystem.
